Evaluation of 'Night Fishing'

'Night Fishing' (much like 'The Grandmother' and 'Meshes of the Afternoon') is an experimental film and is relatively difficult to grasp the story of however it seems to be a story about a father dealing with his own regret in abandoning his wife and child for his own love of fishing, a story represented through him fishing up his daughter. The story then progresses to the daughter and gives us her side of the story supposedly.

'Night Fishing' seems to at first lean towards being a music video. This is incredibly evident through the use close ups of instruments, close-ups on performers, odd visuals that slightly relate to the song/band and the constant jump cuts. I would like to use part of this maybe for further along in the main character's progression where they are murdering someone to maybe show how trivial it is for them and make it more of a disturbing feel to linger on the death of the person. The shallow depth of field here is also something I will use as it of course focuses on the characters and makes it more personal and almost intrusive as such a cruel act occurs.

Similarly to 'The Grandmother' the disturbing use of close-ups can make parts of the film feel creepy or unnerving despite it not seemingly incredibly intentional in 'Night Fishing' as it is close ups on things such as a worm being hooked but the long shot duration really linger on it and makes it feel uncomfortable. Maybe creating a parallel shot like this with a linger on something trivial at the start and then a linger on the dead body may help spectators realise the dark progression of my main character and just how far they've come.

My favourite aspect I would like to use from 'Night Fishing' is the extreme use of enigma. It begins on a music video and the grabbing the girl on the hook and the constant shift in mood creates so many mysteries that it is difficult to interpret the story but the ambiguity and intrigue of it makes it rather interesting to create your own interpretation from the implicit dialogue and mise-en-scene to craft your own meaning of the story. This is something I will be using as I want the story to be experimental but not as far as 'The Grandmother' where the story is so vague its hard to understand the reason in certain shots- I want a story where people can take from it what they will but hopefully still reach a mutual moral from the story albeit with some need for active spectatorship.
