Evaluation of 'Meshes of the Afternoon'

'Meshes of the Afternoon' seems to be an experimental film that follows a loop with a lady following a mysterious figure with a mirror covering their face. The lady then seemingly wakes up and the events she saw inner dream occur in reality but with the figure being a man.

The film uses a strong sense of shadow which is an aspect from the German Expressionism movement which became a nor aspect and it is also used in horror to either imply actions that are not shown or to create an enigma around a figure. It can also have connotations with sinister activity and therefore works well for villainous characters. In addition to this, shadows can create meaning such as lighting in bars giving a sense of imprisonment. I would like to use strong shadows to give a sinister feel to the main character as they progress into the monster The Bargainer is luring him into.

Another feature that the film uses is the characters bring silent. This makes the expressionist performance all the more necessary and effective which is why I too will be using it. The lack of dialogue also creates a unnerving silence that can be reflected through the still mise-en-scene. Another good feature are the main close-ups that use peculiar camera angles. The lack of camera shots angled at eye-level makes actions feel more anonymous and help to disconnect the spectator from the character. I will use these sort of angles as my main character begins to progress too far into the darker, more horrific deals of The Bargainer.

The use of repetition is a common feature in experimental film and it also can be used to some extent to distort the atmosphere as I would like to. The repetition in 'Meshes of the Afternoon' can be confusing and very odd however if I were to take inspiration from it and instead add little details each time so that every day The Bargainer shifts the effects in the main character's life, it will evoke a feeling in spectators that something is slightly off and gradually expose them to the distortion so that the fear is more of a gradual process rather than in short spikes like mainstream horror films tend to lean towards with effects such as 'jump scares' or specific scenes dedicated to the horror part while others are just normal.
